Som journalist var Kelley selv Pulitzer-finalist, som coach og redaktør loser hun prosjekter til mesternivå. Kelley B French kom til Indiana University høsten 2014 etter en karriere som reporter og redaktør ved Floridas største avis, Tampa Bay Times. Hun var finalist til Pulitzerprisen i 2013 for "Never Let Go," en tredelt serie om fødselen av hennes ekstremt premature datter, Juniper.. Mens hun var ved IU, har hun redigert en rekke prisvinnende spesialprosjekter ved The Oregonian, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, The Tampa Bay Times og andre medier. I tre år var hun seniorredaktør for fortellende journalistikk og spesialprosjekter ved USA TODAY, hvor hun opprettet et samarbeid med Media School som har publisert flere dusin historier skrevet av studenter i hennes klasser. French er redaktør for tre historier som har vært finalister til Pulitzerprisen: "Winter’s Tale," av John Barry for Tampa Bay Times; "For Their Own Good," av Ben Montgomery og Waveney Ann Moore for Tampa Bay Times; og "Speak No Evil," av Joan Garrett McClane for Chattanooga Times Free Press.
